The festival of Vivid, or should that be the festival that is Vivid! Vivid is a 23 day festival of lights, art, music and photography. Vivid transforms Sydney into a wonderland of ‘light art’ from sculptures to innovative light installations and grand-scale projections and all of it is free for everyone to enjoy. It has become a huge local and international draw card for the harbour that really doesn’t need a draw card, after all we do have that opera house and bridge. Each year the festival grows, the locations grow and the installations grow.
In 2016, the Opera House was transformed into an animated canvas of Australian indigenous art featuring iconic contemporary works from Karla Dickens, Djon Mundine, Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, Reko Rennie, Donny Woolagoodja, and the late Gulumbu Yunupingu. Celebrating First Nations’ spirituality and culture through the songlines of our land and sky. As the first indigenous work commissioned exclusively for the sails of the Sydney Opera House, the animations will weave through the artists personal journeys, while celebrating the timeless themes and enduring art of Australia’s most influential contemporary First Nations artists..
The indigenous theme is definitely my favourite so far, and its so hard to choose my favourite canvas or four!
We had very limited time this year (a few hours) so i focused on the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) and the iconic Opera House.
I’ve put together two very quick timelapses of the MCA and the Opera House. Each animation cycle went for about 15-20minutes, which I’ve condensed into about minute and half and three minutes.
The MCA can be found here: Vivid 2016, MCA
The Opera House can be found here: Vivid 2016, Opera House
This is a few of my favourites from the MCA.
Choosing my favourites from the Opera House was no easy task!
